Very well seen, Lisl.
Lisl: It was difficult to see the designs on the benches as it was dark and cluttered
That's lovely, isn't it!
Lisl: I "collect" mermaids in churches - one doesn't often find one (or two!)
A superb work of woodcarving well highlighted by your apn and your talent as a photographer
Lisl: Thank you for your kind comment, Marie
What a nice find, you've captured it well too Elisabeth.
Lisl: Thank you, Frank

Fascinating stuff Lisl. You just wonder if the carver actually believed mermaids existed..
Lisl: I bet he did!
J'aime ce travail de sculpture ..magnifique !
Lisl: Isn't it a fine carving?
It's like they're proclaiming eternal love and companionship to each other, Lisl (though surely I'm reading into it!). I love the richness of the wood.
Lisl: All interpretations welcome, Ginnie!

This is a beautiful carving. I love Ginnie's interpretation, she has the experience to say that!
Lisl: She has, Philine. I am pleased you like the carving

Those are wonderful carvings, Lisl and they really had some TLC on the woodwork. I like the version of the "eternal love".... mermaids are special anyway wink...
Lisl: The variety of subjects on these old bench ends seems endless, Astrid, and all so lovingly done

I wonder if Chris would get inspiration from this for his bench restoration project? Its a beautiful piece of work.
Lisl: What a thought, Alan - perhaps a mermaid at each end?

Oh isn’t that wonderful Lisl, and such exquisite carving. Thank you once again for a great day out yesterday in Brisl, where I was able to photograph some windles. It really was an enjoyable day with perfect weather.
Lisl: I love these ancient bench ends, Chad. And I loved yesterday, too - thank you for your company, along with your pals

I get the idea that back in those days, when someone was asked "Do you believe?" and the answer was "Yes", they never got to the point to ask what it is, that the person believes in.
Lisl: Paganism was still quite strong in the early church
A lovely detail that I bet most visitors have never seen
Lisl: You are probably right, Bill - it was hidden away and in such an awkward place to photograph
Of course in Cornwall, the sea was a way of life. Wonderful addition to the collection.
Lisl: You are right, Mary - mermaid legends abound

What a lovely carving. A lovely image Lisl.
Lisl: It was a delight to find, Anne, thank you
Ideas of what Mermaids are supposed to look like haven't changed much over the years.
Lisl: That is quite true, Brian
I'm thinking of the number of hours and the dedication it must have taken the carver to produce these mermaids on the other intricate details we see on this medieval bench end.
Lisl: I am full of admiration for them, Beverly
good craftsmanship carving the bench ends in this photo Lisl....petersmile
Lisl: Isn't it amazing - and probably 500+ years old
How unusual!
Lisl: I have seen mermen on bench ends, but never mermaids
