Male Smew

The smew is a small compact diving duck with a delicate bill. The male is white with a black mask and a black back, the female is grey with a reddish-brown head and white cheek. It is a winter visitor in small numbers from Scandinavia and Russia. Sometimes birds move here from Holland and Denmark to escape freezing weather there.

We have a lot of birds from Scandinavia and Russia here in our nature reserves, but sometimes it might be too cold for them, so in the last winter.
Lisl: It must have been an odd and difficult winter for birds last year, Philine

I've never seen any of these. What a handsome little chap he is. A pity he is camera shy but at least we can admire his beautiful plumage.
Lisl: I do have some full frontals as well, Alan, but I thought this showed off his lovely plumage better. They come to the Cotswold Water Park for the winter motnhs
Wow, Lisl, this is outstanding. Amazing clarity & tones. You can see beads of water on his dark feathers and the hint of a droplet on his bill.
