Boat Friday

The first time I went to Lundy was in this boat - it was the beginning of my love affair with the island, and the first of many, many visits. Twice I went there to actually stay for a few days, travelling in a small fishing boat, and got stranded by gales for 10 days each time, having to be taken off by helicopter

oh, my goodness, rescued twice ?

gasp !
Lisl: Yes, but I didn't mind being stranded in such an exciting place
Quelle aventure ! J'aime ces grandes grues sur le quai.
Lisl: The old cranes are part of what is a museum now, Martine

Love those tall, headless cranes, Lisl.
Lisl: Sorry they are headless, Ray! They date from the 1950s
I like the atmospheres of ports and of course the boats. Here I have both on the same picture and it makes me want to travel ....
Lisl: Ah - this is Bristol, Marie - the Harbourside

I never heard of the island Lundy before - what an adventure life! You should show more pictures of Lundy you love so much!
Lisl: This was pre-digital camera, Philine! In fact I didn't take a camera with me. I was intent on birding

Crumbs, I did not know that you have been to Lundy so many times Lisl. I have always fancied going but never got round to it. Being not very interested in natural stuff, I wonder if more than a day trip might be boring for me.
Lisl: Yes - a day would be enough, Chad. When the boys were young, I used to take one each year on the Lundy Field Society Outing (just one day), and on the fourth year I would take all three, and then repeat it
Lundy - I will look it up. That is what happens when people come to our island. An island love affair.
Lisl: There is something special about islands, Mary. Lundy is very small - only 3 miles long and half a mile wide, in the middle of a stormy channel!
I just had a look at Lundy through Wikipedia. Wow!
Lisl: Some place, eh?
You've certainly lived an adventurous life Lisl. What a lovely old ship.
Lisl: It just kept drawing me back, Brian, but on the whole I haven't travelled a great deal in my life
Love the story behind this Boat Friday image, Lisl.
Lisl: It always gives me a thrill to see this boat berthed with all its reminders, Beverly

The helicopter trip included in the small fishing boat fare? Seems to me you have a knack for getting stranded on Lundy. Takes careful study of the weather reports smile
Lisl: All covered, Louis. I can't imagine that happening today. I used to go at autumn migration time, when the birds could get driven in by storms

That sounds like quite an adventure.
Lisl: I couldn't believe it when it happened twice, Cherie
third time could be a charm, Lisl. i like the truss structures and the robust looking rows of rivets.
Lisl: Those crane structures were actually built in Bath where I live, but the great engineering firm that made them is no more, like so much British enterprise

Now that sounds like my sort of adventure smile How exciting! The “Waverley” goes to Lundy, too, I believe.
Lisl: It does, Alan, and I have also travelled on her a few times
Un bien beau bateau ...le danger est partout et heureusement qu'il y a les helicoptères ..
Bonne journée
Lisl: Yes - though I was happy being stranded, Claudine!
Wow! That's amazing... this very boat! I can think of a few places I wouldn't mind being stranded... And I love helicopter rides!
Lisl: It was when I was on a small fishing boat that I got stranded, Elizabeth
