They get a bad rap - but they do their part for the world, and are quite pretty! This is an excellent shot!
Lisl: Thank you, Elizabeth. At least they are not as aggressive as wasps

You have posed it very nicely, Lisl.
Lisl: I took it out of the trap and placed it on this old urn, and it didn't even wriggle, Ray!
Ces insectes sont dangereux.
Lisl: Fortunately they are not aggressive unless you upset them, but their sting is very nasty
I so remember this, Lisl, and going out to look at it with you. So glad it was drowsy at the moment. smile
Lisl: The many Wasps in the trap weren't so drowsy, Ginnie!

This is definitely a hornet year Lisl, I have seen a number of them myself
Lisl: I have been trying to photograph one for years
I like very much insects but hornets frighten me always a little. Very beautiful photo, colors are extra
Lisl: Thank you, Marie. Hornets are a bit intimidating

To me, they have a fearsome reputation for causing pain and misery so this is a close as I want t get t one. That said, they are quite attractive.
Lisl: The only person I have heard of being stung by one was my son when working on the plum harvest in France. And he said it was excruciating
they do not look as their reputation would suggest, Lisl. i like this shot.
Lisl: This one was extremely dozy, and I was able to move it gently on a stick

That is quite the flying giant, Lisl. It was most interesting to see them all over in your moth trap. I have to admit that they are very photogenic.
Lisl: They are, Astrid - I think too that they are very handsome

I can’t say that I can recall ever seeing one Lisl, but then I’m not looking.
Lisl: I have noticed that you are not into insects, Chad. But you couldn't miss one of these if you saw one
The first time I saw one up close...it flew past my head I was terrified! Wasps are bad enough!! Mind you they are magnificent creatures
Lisl: They are gentle giants unless provoked, Bill
Très belle prise de vue ..je n'en ai pas vu cette année
Lisl: There is still time, Claudine!

Another excellent clear shot of a critter. I wonder if they do anything with the moths in the trap.
Lisl: Thank you, Louis. There were a lot of moth wings (and no bodies) in the trap, but I think the wasps had had them; but probably hornets, too
This is a type I haven never seen before. Beautiful.
Lisl: It is always special for me to see one, Mary; and a delight to have them in the garden at last
Magnificent clarity and colour, Lisl. You were very brave to pick it up.
Lisl: It was dozy, and I didn't actually touch it with my fingers,Beverly
They are fine looking insects as is this photo. When I was 17 I was out on my first motorcycle when I rode through a swarm of these at about 60mph.and some decided to make their way down the neck of my shirt, not a pleasant experience but I live to tell the tale.
Lisl: That must have been quite horrific, Brian
Not one I'd like to annoy!
Lisl: They are reasonably tolerant, Tom
they will have a nest nearby Lisl... they have quite a sting to them... give them lots of space around you....petersmile
Lisl: I keep aware, Peter. I am intrigued as to where the nest is

What a great image - a lovely looking insect.
Lisl: Thank you, Anne - they are very photogenic if you can get them still!

You have captured the details perfectly.

We had a hornet in our garden, earlier this year. Thankfully he moved on after a few days.
Lisl: Thank you, Cherie. This is the first year I have seen hornets in the garden here
