photoblog image Teneral Southern Hawker, Somerset Levels (1/7)

Teneral Southern Hawker, Somerset Levels (1/7)

Last week I spent a whole day on the Somerset Levels, and had some very lucky photo opportunities. Rather than make a collage, I thought I would like to do a series of 7 pictures, ruuning on consecutive days, to share them. This is a brand-new female Southern Hawker Dragonfly, taken soon after emergence and before her maiden flight. The shininess in her wings, which sometimes looks "petroly", indicates that her wings are only just drying out.

A stunning specimen, Lisl. You've captured the transparency of the wings beautifully.

This is a beautiful lady. Absolute delightful and fabulous picture. Love the way the wings show.
You did an extremely job, good for you to show the whole series, one by one.
Lisl: The wings are so delicate at this stage - later they may get torn on branches and other undergrowth

Such delicate looking wings which are probably quite strong relly.
Lisl: They are very strong, and can make quite a whirring noise, too

Having tried to take some dragonfly images myself recently, I realise just how hard it is so I really appreciate something of this quality. Superb.
Lisl: Thank you, Alan. I must admit I do spend a lot of time just looking and searching, and this year it has been difficult to find many dragonflies
Fine image Lisl.
Lisl: Thank you very much, Richard
I would give anything to take such a picture, even a quarter as good as this one Lisl, this is excellent, well worthy for inclusion in a natural history book.
Lisl: That is really very kind of you, Brian, I am hoping to make a Natural History calendar for next year, and will probably include this one
Yes - a very handsome dragon!
Lisl: Very handsome indeed, Tom
Simply wonderful Lisl. The details are superb!
Lisl: Thank you so much, Richard - she was very sharply defined

Great take Lisl, beautiful hawker!
Lisl: Thank you, Juan Carlos - it has been hard going finding any dragonflies at all here this year
Gosh, Elisabeth, this is brilliant, I missed it yesterday. You should be proud of this. smile
Lisl: Pleased that you feel more comfortable with this one, Frank! Thank you
