Not so much lying in state as lounging in state...
Lisl: Well, he has been there a long time, Larry.......

De Hauteville... mais c'est un Français ?
En tout cas il est très cool sur cette pause.
Lisl: A descendant of one of the nobles who came across in 1066 with William the Conqueror

This is really beautiful, I love the radiant colours.
Lisl: The guide book says it was repainted in 1860, but it looks as if it has been done again more recently, Astrid
I has a rather comedic feel to it!
Lisl: His face certainly is surreal, Elizabeth
I agree with Elizabeth, especially since he looks like he won't be upstaged by any roaring lion!
Lisl: And his lion footrest looks benign....

His stance and clothing are very distinctive
Lisl: Unusual to find an effigy that isn't stretched out on what is usually a recumbent animal, Chris

It looks as if he has just kicked that lion Lisl.
Lisl: So that is why it is roaring, Chad!

Both the face of the lion(?) and the knight gives them quite a camp look (am I allowed to say such things these days?) It is a fine piece of carver and the colouring of the armour makes it look very realistic.
Lisl: I think it is wonderful, too, Alan
My parents lived in Chew Magna before the war.

He is in an uncomfortable position for eternity
Lisl: Worth a visit for old times' sake, Bill. I have posted a FB thing for the great cafe there

There's some connection between Sir John and the Stones of Callenish in the Outer Hebrides according to https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=etKWIsEnPWgC&pg=PA187&lpg=PA187&dq=Sir+John+de+Hauteville&source=bl&ots=RrPh1LObgd&sig=u-hhIO1w3tweMzE-nELekSlVlx0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjUz7qDlYPVAhULIMAKHXuKAQYQ6AEIRzAF#v=onepage&q=Sir%20John%20de%20Hauteville&f=false
Lisl: That seems very odd - must have a read, thank you, Alan

Keeping a lion at bay with one foot, while sleeping. Now, that is a proper knight.
Lisl: Extremely laid back, I would say
That is a very good carving and it seems very well looked after as well.
Lisl: Quite a striking example, I thought
He has found a way to pet his kitty.
Lisl: I have never seen a lion supporter quote like this before, Mary
That is a very nice shot.
I might not get on to comment some days. I have been evacuated from might home because of forest fires and am staying 150 miles away.
Lisl: I am so sorry to hear that, Michael. I pray your home will be saved, and that it won't be too long before you can return
he looks like he enjoyed lounging around Lisl... i like your find today....petersmile
Lisl: I was pleased to find him, too, Peter - in a village about 20 miles away
They both look happy...smile
Lisl: You'd expect them to be a bit bored by now, Frank
